COROWA SHIRE FARES WELL

Corowa Shire's business development committee, Business Corowa Howlong Mulwala (BCHM) say that Corowa Shire has withstood the recent global economic downturn well.

An unemployment rate of just 3.1% was reported for Corowa Shire by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, compared to the State average of 4.6%. This makes Corowa Shire one of the better performing areas with a very low unemployment rate.

While the most recent building statistics indicate there has been a reduction in building and development for the 2008/2009 financial year compared to the previous year; current activity is a return to the 2002 – 2004 periods, when similar activity was reported. If the value of redevelopment activity at Thales Australia is included in the figures, then extraordinary development is currently occurring.

Property sale statistics are down on growth from previous years, however the Corowa Shire market is still generally following an upward trend in property values and the average annual growth rate for the last nine year period has ranged between 7 – 11%

Members of the business group feel that Corowa Shire has a lot to look forward to.

A major boost to the local economy will occur from significant government funding which has been allocated to many of the schools within Corowa Shire for infrastructure projects and ten community infrastructure projects are currently near completion as a result of the Australian Government Community Infrastructure Program.

High hopes are also held for the positive economic impact expected for Corowa Shire from the Oaklands mining development, with Coalworks Limited promoting this as their flagship project.

Mayor of Corowa Shire and BCHM Committee Chairperson, Gary Poidevin said Council's recent sale of the Corowa Flour Mill to Corowa Mills Inc. will secure the future of the iconic building and provide widespread economic and community benefit.

“It is about to be transformed into a nationally significant tourist attraction” he said.

Corowa Shire enjoys some of highest population growth rates in regional New South Wales and Victoria, and members of the BCHM Committee believe this is a tribute to the areas appeal as a tourism and economic destination.

“That doesn't mean we should become complacent though” said Mayor Poidevin, “Council wants to work with business and industry throughout the Shire and we appreciate the input from members of the BCHM Committee”.
