Why does Council charge rates?

The Corowa Shire provides a diverse range of services, facilities, kprograms and events to enrich the lives of all residents.

We manage and maintain vital infrastructure such as local roads and footpaths and provide the community with public facilities such as Community Resource Centres, Libraries, Museums and Swimming Pools.

Council also provides and maintains sporting grounds, parks and playgrounds.

One of the ways in which Council funds these services is through its statutory power to charge shire rates which are calculated based on your property land value provided by the Valuer General’s Department every four years.

Rates account for the largest portion of Council's revenue raising capabilities.  Fees and charges, and grants from Federal and State governments make up the balance.
