“Steer Clear of Driver Distractions” was in operation in Corowa Shire during January 2011. The local road safety campaign is a Corowa Shire Council project funded by the RTA and supported by local police, caravan parks, motels and other facilities visited by tourists in the Shire. Targeting visitors to our Shire, it provides information about the types of things that can cause driver distractions and urges drivers to concentrate, stay aware and have a safe and happy holiday. RTA Statistics show that between 2004-2009 30.8% of all crashes in Corowa Shire occurred during peak holiday periods and public holidays. Crashes can be as severe as causing death or injury however even minor crashes can result in financial burden, stress and have a negative impact on holiday experience's. Everyone who stays at an accommodation place in the Shire, whether it is a caravan park, motel or self contained unit will be given a brochure with information that outlines the major things that can cause driver distraction. Driver distraction is attributed to 48% of crashes that occur nationally (AAMI Crash Index 2009) with “texting” being the leader in a long list which also includes controlling kids in the back, adjusting vehicle controls, talking with friends, looking away from the road, eating and smoking. Posters, Variable Message Signs and other supporting information will be seen around the main towns during January as well as police targeting speed and drink driving. The aim of the road safety campaign is to reduce the number of crashes occurring during the January and Easter holiday periods, increase awareness of the things that can cause driver distraction, and help people visiting Corowa Shire experience a safe and happy “crash free” holiday. EASTER CAMPAIGN DELIVERS CLEAR MESSAGE During 2011 Easter holiday period more than 1500 visitors to Corowa Shire were given information brochures about the dangers of Driver Distractions when they checked into their accommodation. The Easter road safety campaign also included support from local Police who were targetting speed and drink driving and VMS messages at the entry to towns.
