Young People have opportunities to participate in many sporting, recreation and cultural activities via several groups, clubs and organisations within the Shire. A Youth Advisory Committee supported by the Council and the local High School actively engages young people 12-18 years to identify issues and concerns and assist in the planning and development of youth services and facilities. In Corowa Unit Y provides a safe and welcoming place for young people to meet friends, take part in casual and organised activities or just hang out. The youth centre is located in 44 Queen Street (close to the main shopping centre) and is open from 3.30pm-5pm every Tuesday during school terms to plan social nights, youth week and holiday activities. Once per month at Unit Y social nights are held that involve movies on the big screen, games challenges etc.
Corowa also has a Skate Park and BMX track and Howlong has a BMX track that is popular with both locals and visitors. During the Dec/Jan 2010 holiday break an "ArtStart" workshop at the COROWA SKATE RAMPS, lead by professional aerosol artist, was held for youth to learn aerosol art skills and techniques. More than 50 people attended. Some had a go, others watched the process and most contributed to the designs. We think that the Corowa Skate ramps have the best art display in the region. Take a look next time you visit the skate park.
UNIT Y "MAKE OVER" - ARTSTART PROJECT The Make-Over project was funded by ArtStart and supported by TAFE NSW and Murray Arts. It involved local youth working with local artists to learn art techniques and skills. The project ran over 4 days and involved painting a mural, mosaic decorations and landscaping of gardens. 12 students from Corowa High School were involved in the construction of the artworks with several others taking part in the design and development.
